Autosuggestion is a psychological technique that was developed by apothecary Émile Coué at the beginning of 20th century.
He became known for reassuring his clients by praising each remedy's efficiency and leaving a small positive notice with each given medication. Coué noticed that in certain cases he could improve the efficiency of a given medicine by praising its effectiveness to the patient. He realized that those patients to whom he praised the medicine had a noticeable improvement when compared to patients to whom he said nothing.
Autosuggestion is a very powerful mental process. It is the term applied to all ideas, thoughts, proposals, or affirmations that are applied by yourself and that reach the mind through the five senses.
In the simplest language autosuggestion is simply self-suggestion or the process of making suggestions to yourself.
Plant The Garden of Your Mind
If you don't take control and plant healthy positive thoughts in your subconscious mind with autosuggestion, you can be sure that your subconscious mind will accept the suggestions coming from other sources.
Our minds are very much like a garden. Just as seeds grow, so do our thoughts. If you tend it and plant good useful seeds, you will reap a harvest of positivity in your life. If you ignore what is being planted in your garden and let anything grow there, you will have a mess of weeds and useless plants.
If we do not properly water and care for our garden the newly sprouting seeds will die. The positive thoughts we planted will start to wilt when not tended to, and the thoughts that we do not want are left to grow wildly, just like weeds.
Regardless of the hot temperature and dry soil, the weeds grow strong, as their roots had burrowed deep within the earth and were holding on tightly. Negative thoughts can grow like weeds.
How to Prepare the Soil.
As we plant the garden of our mind, we must select thoughts that will grow into beautiful flowers. We prepare the soil by taking care of our bodies. Good nutrition, adequate sleep, fresh air and exercise all contribute to a healthy garden.
Meditating is another way to create fertile soil. When we learn to relax our minds, we become more aware of our thoughts and we have more control over which thoughts get planted into our garden. When we notice a thought spouting in our garden that we do not want, we need to remove it, just as we would pull the unwanted weeds when they begin to grow.
The positive thoughts we nurture and help to grow will become like beautiful flowers. Just like flowers grow and multiply, so do our positive thoughts. We will soon become much more than we could ever imagine and will attract other like-minded positive people. Our positive, fantastic mindset will be like a flower garden with its intoxicating odor attracting those that will challenge and stimulate us to grow along with them. Always remember that, "Likeness attracts likeness".
How to Enrich the Soil
Remember that when you use self-suggestion or self talk, ordinary, bland, uninspiring, insipid words will not reach your subconscious mind anymore than they reach your conscious mind.
Your subconscious mind loves to work on things that are mixed with strong emotion and feeling. This principle is so important that I cannot emphasize it enough. Start right now to plant positive affirmations into the garden of your mind. But there is a price to pay for being able to influence your subconscious mind and that is being persistent.
There is nothing to be gained by allowing yourself to become discouraged if your initial attempts at affirmation or self talk do not produce the results you desire than the key is persistent repetition combined with belief.
Have a Definite Goal in Mind.
Remember that you need to have a definite goal in mind.
- I will lose 10 pounds
- I will be tobacco free
- I will stop yelling at my children
- I will start a business
Whatever your goal is must be clear and measurable. It also must be something that you strongly desire. It must be so strong a desire that you can actually visualize it even to the point that you can see that you have attained it already.
Repeat your goal daily. That means everyday and no weekends off until you start to find yourself automatically taking the actions necessary to get to where you want to go.
Write it down so it gets embedded in your subconscious mind. Write it down and place it in a location where you will see it often throughout your day. Very soon your cynicism and skepticism which are far too commonplace these days, will be replaced with powerful positive self talk.
